IPAF MEWP Spotter e-learning Training Course

This course is designed for Spotters/Banksmen during operations involving MEWPs. Providing knowledge to safely assist MEWP operators when visibility is restricted or in areas where there are potential hazards to people, structures or equipment. The course covers the responsibilities of the Spotter, communication with a MEWP operator, identifying hazards and maintaining safe working areas.

Who is the course for?

Anyone who is required to act as a Spotter during MEWP operations. The course is suitable for individuals who are responsible for assisting MEWP operators where visibility may be restricted or where additional guidance is required to help maintain safe working practices. Examples would include site operatives, banksmen, ground personnel, supervisors and other workers involved in MEWP operations across industries such as construction, facilities management, retail, airports and arboriculture.

  • The role and responsibilities of the MEWP Spotter
  • MEWP legislation & guidance
  • MEWP types & applications
  • MEWP selection and limitations
  • Site assessment and hazard awareness
  • Safe positioning of the Spotter
  • Communication between the Spotter and MEWP operator
  • Standard hand signals and communication methods
  • Blind spots and restricted visibility
  • Safe MEWP movement and manoeuvring
  • Exclusion zones and protecting other people in the work area
  • Overhead hazards, including power lines and structures
  • Emergency procedures and dealing with unsafe situations

Completion of the course:

Delegates will complete an online test. Successful delegates will receive the IPAF MEWP Spotter qualification and a digital certificate. The qualification will also be available through the IPAF ePAL app.
